God had given us a powerful tool of persuasion which is our smile. Smile is a powerful non verbal communication that can express happiness, joy, friendliness as well as demonstrating warmth, empathy and cooperation. Paul Ekman, who is expert on facial expressions, found out that smiles are cross-cultural and are define as the same meaning in different societies. It is understood by everyone.

However, many people do not know how to make use of it. Are you one of them? If so, by practicing this simple expression, you can improve your communication skills. Smile can conveys more emotion than words can.

Ron Gutman, the founder and CEO of Health Tap had discovered some amazing facts about smiling. On average, children smile about 400 times a day while adults smile only about 15.
Surprisingly, a single smile can give you as much energy as 2000 chocolate bars. Yet, smiling is healthier than eating so many of chocolates. You do not have to worry about getting fat or gaining weight.


1. Smiling could extend your life

It can predict how long you will live. A study says that smile can add at least seven years to your life.

2. Relieve stress

Smile has the power to melt away your stress and troubles. By forcing ourselves to smile, we “trick” our body into believing that everything is good, thereby decreasing the level of stress-enhancing hormones like cortisol, adrenaline and dopamine and reduce the physical and emotional stress. It helps you to stay positive and stay away from depression, anxiety and stress.

3. Boost immune system, lowers blood pressure

It can make you healthier. Your body is relaxed when you smile and it helps to boost the immune system. Scientists said that smiling can prevent the flu and colds. On the other hand, smiling can lower your blood pressure.

4. Smiling makes us look attractive

We are easily attracted to people who smile. It improves one’s appearance. A study discovered that 69% of people think that women are more attractive when they smile than when they are wearing makeup. It is an inexpensive way to change your looks.

5. Smiles use from 5 to 53 facial muscles

When you smile, you are lifting 5 to 53 facial muscles. People who to smile often looks younger and feel better.

6. Increase job opportunities

Bosses are 12% more likely to promote people who smile a lot because it makes a person seems more confident and approachable.
Smile can help you in making friends. It forms connections and can create trust among people, breaking down barriers as well as fostering happiness.

7. Changes our mood

When you are down, you can lift your spirits by inserting some happy thoughts and forcing yourself to smile. It will secrete mood-enhancing hormones like endorphins, natural pain killers and serotonin. It is similar as Morphine. However, smiling is a natural and harmless drug.


8. Smiling is contagious

It is proven that smiling is contagious. A research in Sweden indicates that people had difficulty frowning when they look at people who were smiling. Everyone has the power to make the others smile. You can brighten up someone’s day by simply passing a smile to them. You can try to smile at someone on the street when there is eye contact, most probably the person will smile in return. But if the person does not smile back at you, please do not take it personally.

There is a famous saying “Smile and the whole world smiles with you.” Smile is priceless. It costs nothing and it creates much. So, don’t cares whether your teeth are pearly white or yellowish, don’t forget to smile. :)
